There was a time when the only way to communicate was either face to face, or via letters which took a long time to arrive. That restricted communications mostly to the people in your immediate vicinity.

Today I have my friends and family in my IM and I can chat with them across the continents. I've even chatted with cousins who I've never met face to face.

Definitely. For example, there was a time when you could not text; you had to pick up the telephone and call them, hear their voice, hear their vocal inflections. Talking on the telephone is so much more personal than texting. That's just a common example of how technology can interfere with personal relationships.
