what do you mean? in foil and epee, the point of the blade hits the leme and it regesters in the machine

in the jacket, the entire silver part is a contact area, and in the swors, theres a tiny spring that registers if youve pressed hard enough to score a point.

In epee, it depends on the weapon only. If the point is depressed far enough the "switch" is closed and the machine registers a touch. In foil, the point is depressed a certain amount and closes a switch but it must contact the lamee of the other fencer to close the second switch and create a full circuit (and register the touch). In sabre, the switch is closed simply when the sabre touches the opponent's lamee.
