Category names are unclear - what do you think of the following suggestion?

An issue brought up by BigDaddy: ------------------------ This isn't a suggestion for a given category or change, technically, but AB has various categories labeled "How do I...?" (New Users, iPod how tos, other how tos...) and other categories I've seen that are labeled similarly. Can these be changed to show to what subcategory they are referring? For example, "Apple iPod How Tos"... "New AB User How Tos"...? The problem I see is that many of these come up in the category search box and there are times 2-3 of the same come up. Since they only say "How do I...?" there, some don't pay any attention to the category under which these appear, and select them. For example: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1427101 was flagged (AND ACCEPTED) to "New Users / How do I...?" when it's clearly Genealogy or Family Relationships.

Great point, BigDaddyBS!! This is exactly the kind of thing that we want to clean up. There are two "names" that go into making a category: the one that shows up in the "breadcrumbs" section at the top of any screen which tends to be a shorter version, and the fuller version in larger bold print that shows the category name above the questions. Previously the "breadcrumb" name was meant to be short and sweet - so as not to take up too much room. However, since this is also the one that shows up in the search function, it's important that it be clear on a stand-alone basis - which the ones you pointed out are not. One of the objectives of the review project is to make sure category names are clear and self-explanatory. For that reason, we will make it a point to add words to a name or change it altogether to make it clearer. I'll start on the ones you mentioned tonight - if anyone else has any category name/title clarity issues, feel free to post them here :)

Just a quick update. As I approve suggested categories I will make sure to make the category names clearer. As AB-Caitlin mentioned, this is a learning process for us and we are all trying to improve the categories. Not everyone will be happy with our choices of course, but we want to make sure that good suggestions are implemented. So you will start to see clearer category names and well as a cleaner hierarchy system. All we ask is that you be patient as it will take a bit of time. Both of us are working on the project as well as approving and sometimes disapproving categories. Thanks for your continued suggestions and support!

Update: I have gone through all the categories and removed the "how do i..." markers. All categories are now named "ABC how-tos" and that will be our new standard. Thanks for pointing this issues out - I think the matter is now resolved!
