I'm not sure if I can give an adequate definition for the Romantic era. Do you read poetry? Well it's like the difference between Shakespeare and Burns. Shelley and Dryden. Keats and Pope. You may realize the classical and Renaissance poets all adhered so strictly to structured form and rhyme. The later poets were much more melodious, fluid and expansive in their lyrics. Maybe you can also tell a difference between Rembrandt and Van Gogh or even Monet. I'm sorry I'm not a music expert so I can't technically say for sure. You should really wrap yourself in the music of Chopin if you haven't already to get a good "feel" of the Romantic music. I'd also suggest some of my favorites: Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Ravel, Dvorak, and Brahms. These guys' works have that Romantic flavor to them.
