Romanticism is the period of classical music from 1815 to 1910. It's characterized by lush, passionate, and expressive music. These types of pieces are usually longer than those of the classical period. This is just skimming the surface, there is much more about Romantic music.

A great way to understand Romantic period music would be by doing a simple comparison. Pick a Haydn's or Mozart's (Classical period music) piano sonata and compare with a Chopin's. Piano sonatas comparison is simpler than comparing with concertos or symphonies. Like what The Ruehl Book had mentioned, the main characteristics of Romantic period music is its expressiveness and tend to have longer phrasings, this in turn may develop into a slightly less obvious motif. However, some Romantic period music adopted the usual AABA classical sonata form.
