I had a detective partner just like that. He was the thinker(he knew all the criminals and their mo's)and i was the rookie workaholic. This was actually not a bad setup for us. we solved a lot of crime and arrested 100's of criminals. Bottom line is: if the business is prospering, don't fix it if it ain't broke. Each situation is different.

You should have a division of labor agreement written up with your partner. Try sitting down with him to begin discussions so you can move towards formally addressing this issue.

Maybe you and he need to sit down and have a talk about the way you want to divide the actual work. If you like it this way, then by all means don't say anything; but I suspect you feel like you've been sh*t upon! Maybe you can suggest a more even division of the work part of the business. He can think while you both work; I think that would work better for you and you won't feel like you're being taken advantage of. Good luck. Let us know how things are going every now and then!

Only working partners get a paycheck, so when you want to contribute to this company by working, than you will get a paycheck. Now what would a thinking partner do in this situation? Your other option is to but him out.
-
Tell him to think about getting another job.

I sure as hell would ask him what all of his 'thinking' has done for the business!! has it brought in any new customers? has it helped with lower expenses? has it helped in the way the business is run, or, its efficiency? YOu need to find out from him exactly what his contribution is..........if you don't like it, kick his butt out!!!!!!! as most of the other answers said to do!!!!

Easy fix... do what you need to do to make enough money to sell out and form your own company. You keep the clients, he fails, and you are free to use your hard work to benefit only yourself, who is doing all the work. In business there is no such thing as a thinking partner unless they own you.
