Possibly because most women do not have the stamina to go five sets. Men play best two of three, and only play best three of five in majors or grand slam events.

Tradionally this has been the case in major tournaments and now even though women are capable to play best out of 5, they still play best out of 3. I would like to see this changed, I think women can play best out of 5.

It's not sometimes, its all the time. Men play 3 sets unless its grandslams which its best of 5 sets. Sometimes a 3 set men tournament will have a 5 set final but that's only sometimes. Women play 3 sets always.

I think men should play only 3 sets as well because men's tennis is too long and boring to watch.
It is surely to be that in the past women did not have as much stamina, but lots of women now-a-days surely can go the full five again and again.

Probably it is uncomfortable to play for so long if you have your periods (and some tournament you have to play).

This has been the traditional play in Grand Slam tournaments which are now usually the only ones that the men play best of five sets these days.

I think it is quite possible with the increase in fitness in the womens game that they are capable of playing the extra sets.

This year for the first time in a Grand Slam Wimbledon will be paying equal prize money.
I love both the men and womens game but if they are to be paid the same, they should be expected to do the same amount of play if necessary

It's because of tradition. Stamina/conditioning is based on the body's experience to new stimulus - if you always limit someone's capability, then they won't grow. There are plenty of women who could do 5 sets, because they put in the work for it.

Fitness levels just keep increasing. You have to think that about since 100 years ago, women for the most part haven't been allowed/encouraged to participate in organized sports, and now they're at all new heights in such a relatively short amount of time. They'll continue to get better/evolve to cope with new pressures.

So, in a nutshell, they play 2 sets because of convention. But like some others said, personally I think both the men's and women's game should be 3 sets.
