The Pink Panther is really a large jewel and is very expensive. On the cartoon it would be difficult to animate a jewel and make it interesting, so they decided a character with human like qualities would work much better.

The pink panther is a representation of an animal. The cartoon character is a representation of a large, pink jewel (named "The Pink Panther") given to an Indian princess by her father on her birthday. Watch the opening to the original Pink Panther movie (which is only a few minutes long) and everything will come to light.

Just guessing but the name is alliterative, Blue Panther just doesn't have the same ring.
