Briefly: gypsum helps or perhaps limestone. Compost or humus is the best thing to add. There is no better amendment than the natural organic materials of compost or humus for handling clay. Gypsum (calcium sulfate) probably does not have a dramatic effect, but it could help in cases where there are too many salts in the soil. It could probably make the soil a little more loose. It probably will not alter the ph to much of a degree. Limestone (calcium carbonate) probably will not have a dramatic effect either. Limestone raises the ph making the soil more alkaline. Sulfur added to soil typically lowers the ph, making the soil more acidic. Playing with ph is tricky. Organic material decomposing (like compost) tends to naturally balance ph.
