Devo is short for "De-evolution", which is what the band's founders believe humanity is undergoing (particularly in America) with our celebrity-worshipping consumption-oriented anti-intellectual society. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devo Sadly, I think the last 30+ years have proven them correct...:-P... . . .

As an interpreter of australian teenagers, 'devo' is a shortened version of the word 'devastated'. However I doubt this would be the origin.
