  • Technically, TEACHERS did. Way long ago knowledge was passed down from person to person, and when certain persons were recognised as knowledgeable they were encouraged to "teach" others. As these teachers started out teaching anywhere and everywhere, they soon realised that to be effective they needed some better organisation, and arranged for a given place to teach, which came to be the introduction of schools. Gradually over the ages the schools evolved into the system we have today.

  • The tradition that has come to us comes from the Medieval Europe. Our word school comes from the medieval Latin word schola (as in scholar). The Greeks had their academies but we wouldn't really recognize them as we would a medieval grammar school or University.
