NOT the american cancer society, hmm, good question... Invest in an all-american company, you give them money, hopefully make more jobs, AND you might make a return!

I prefer to give my money directly to people who I think need it. Although many charitable organizations are reputable, even they have administrative costs. If I give money directly, then the recipient gets the full benefit of it, and only the recipient can be responsible for wasting it.

The Salvation Army ~ lowest administrative overhead, helps the most people in the most ways.

We have a Hospice here who do great work with the terminally ill i always give to them and Oxfam.

Those charities where YOU KNOW as much of YOUR hard-earned money you give is used for the actual charity - NOT to pay HUGE salaries and high rent and other high expenses. I KNOW for a fact the Red Cross IS NOT one of those charities! It escapes my memory which IRS form you can request about every legitimate charity. BUT I KNOW they have to file a special form with the IRS to continue their tax-exempt status. Thanks for asking your Q! I did my best to answer it. I hope the information helps.
