Sometimes it's baffling, sometimes it's not. Photoshop is an example of something that really has no competitor, so they can price it high. Acrobat, on the other hand, is widely regarded to be of mediocre quality, and there are decent competitors who undercut Adobe. Still, they seem rather stubborn about pricing on it... I think they can get away with that because the PDF is a standard that everyone uses, so many corporations and government entities buy Adobe's tool rather than competitors'.

They are into making money. I prefer Foxit and GIMP over Acrobat and Photoshop as they do the same thing, but then again, people are willing to spend twice what they need to on a Mac just to have that snazzy Apple logo , so I can only conclude that people are willing to pay extra for status while remaining blissfully ignorant abot technology. Besides, which REALLY matters more; getting stuff done efficiently or looking cool?
