Good luck with your mission
A number of years ago I found a hotel on the Spanish Steps, $20.00 per night best advice is look around, or ask.
Students and people just travelling hand out or show you to central places for very reasonable prices.
Most speak english if your Italian not up to scratch, its a wonderful city btw, avoid the beggers though and large groups of children, their hands go every where I seen it happen but didn't happen to me.
Tip don't sit down to be served in the coffee shop/cafe especially outside do as the locals order at the counter save you loads of bucks, in fact study or befriend a local/s. Have fun there are lots of free guids to look out for specially around the Forum.
