DOHC and SOHC CV axles are interchangeable. However there is a difference in the 5-speed vs automatic axles. The spline counts are different and the automatic axle is a bit shorter. Regardless, you wouldn't have been able to get it installed because it wouldn't have lined up with the transmission and spindle.
I've bent the metal rotor guard several times resulting in screeching noises. You should double check that and just bend it away from the rotor if possible.
Also, if you got the rotor dirty while you were working on removing the axle you could have grit trapped between the pad/rotor.

You're reading 93 Protege changed cvc axels. now it is squelling like hell. Not the rotor disc cover. Sounds like the brakes. Someone suggested that there are two different axels and they are different lengths. One for a single overhead cam and one for double.
