I'm a Christian and I feel that suicide is caused by mental incapacity of one sort or another. I, personally, believe that God understands that. Outside of Catholicism, I think that's a pretty standard belief, but I certainly can only speak from my experience and knowledge. As to "unforgivable sins", I simply don't know. There are certainly sins that I could never forgive...especially sins against children. Is God able to forgive them? I suspect that anyone who is capable of committing such a crime is not the sort of person who could ever sincerely seek such forgiveness. I think they are incapable of it, although they may try to give lip service to it.

Most of me thinks that a person goes to hell if that person commits suicide which is probably why I'm still among the living. The funny thing is that God does not forgive it or is that something that's made up among us. Either he forgives everything or he forgives nothing.

Unfortunately some in my opinion take the route of committing suicide because they see no other way out of a particular situation, the mind plays heavy games on people. I don't think being a christian has bearing on a person who is comtemplating ending their life. Its just a way out for them, I don't think they are clearly thinking....I do think they believe deep within themselves its a solution and hell has nothing to do in their decision making. I can not answer the later part of your question because I have no intention of ending my life at my own hands intentionally. But I found your question a very good question indeed! I wish you well!

No, I do not think that it is an unforgivable sin. I do think that God knows that each one of us can get in such a state of great despair that we could do this. I understand that some theologians would disagree with me and that is ok. And, it is not an easy question to answer. Say a person has had great losses in their lifes and has gotten in a severe major depression - they are mentally ill at that time and may feel hopeless and helpless. I'm not saying that this is ok and the way out of their pain. But, they are not thinking in a normal way because of their illness. Edited 04/11/2009-correct spelling, not content.

*sigh* despite not being christian, you have a lot of that catholic guilt thing imprinted in you deeply. There is no unforgivable sin. If lowly humans can have unlimited capacity to forgive our children, then surely an almighty God can forgive.

I believe that God's plan for ALL of us is for ALL of us to eventually be in Heaven. The course that we have to go through, however, may be longer or shorter due to our own actions. Suicide would defiitely be one that would make the course longer. We are here to learn and grow spiritually. To commit suicide is to deliberately deny God the opportunity to help us. The closer that one is to God's love the more they are in Heaven so to refuse God's love would seem to put you pretty far away from there. Meaning that you would have to overcome a lot to get to that point. The problem is that we need the physical body to do the growing. So, to commit suicide removes you from your flowerpot, you might say. Another way to look at it is like quitting a job where you work for your father so that you can go on welfare.

I am not christian. But am a Baptist preachers daughter. If you insist on believing this stuff, the only unpardonable sin is to turn away from these teachings once you have heard them. The thing with suicide (I believe) is that you were sent here to learn. If you take your life you are only hurting your own self further. The same battles with yourself will continue whether you are here in the body or there in spirit. This gift of life is a faster way of working through our inperfections. Christians believe that when you die, God zaps you and makes you perfect. Somehow making you worthy of sitting with the holy. NOT TRUE! You must learn it and earn it.

I don't remember anyone coming back to say either way. People are free to think what they want but they aren't the ones that judge.

i dont know if its the only unforgiveable sin but it is one of them i guess we shouldnt commit suicide as chrisians i've wanted to several times and attempted to but just the prospect of going to hell

although suicide is such a selfish thing, i believe all sins are equal. a christian could have just been on the phone & lied to someone, then had a car accident w/o getting to ask for forgiveness, but as long as they truly gave their life to Christ, they can still go to heaven. the Bible says that the unpardonable sin is blasphemy - cursing/rejecting God

Catholics believe suicide when committed in full knowledge and deliberate consent is a complete turning away from God (a mortal sin) and will send a person to hell. There are 3 conditions of a mortal sin: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. While suicide (or any kind of murder) is always a grave matter, people who commit suicide may not always have full knowledge of what they're doing. Drugs can definitely impair one's thinking, as can other things, such as diseases, intense pain, or anguish. Therefore, suicide is not automatically treated as a mortal sin. We are commanded by Christ not to judge others so we leave final judgment to God who alone knows each person's heart. For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church: On mortal sin, paragraphs 1857-1859: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect1chpt1art8.shtml#1857 On suicide, paragraphs 2282-2283: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art5.shtml#2282 With love and prayers in Christ.

Well first stated in the bible it is said that all sins are equal so in that case committing suicide is just as sinful as having a lustful thought towards another person. Therefore I feel the answer to that question is know. Only one can answer that and that is God who will judge thee. Truth of the matter is no one has the right on earth to say what can and can't be forgiven only God Almighty will decide on the Day of Judgement. How can we of little intelligence know what God actually has planned.

The problem is not that the sin itself is unforgivable. I think there is no such thing as a truly unforgivable sin. I mean, Paul used to kill and hunt christians before he became one :P, look how he ended up. The problem is that it is the only sin that you can't ask forgiveness for before you actually meet Him face to face. I don't know how it goes exactly when you die, but at some point you have to explain your actions. I think there are many more selfish sins (all?) so i don't think this is a big exception, and I know God knows you and your mind alot better than your psychiatrist does... so i think He understands. it remains sin anyhow if you ask me. So you should also ask "if you didn't ask forgiveness for steeling 10 dollars before you die, can you enter heaven?" cause i think it's the same question

What a question. I am a Christian and believe that suicide is a desparate act by a desparate person. We all sometimes feel backed into a corner. However some people need help and if they do not get it their mental judgement is impaired. I do not believe that suicide is an unpardonable sin and I do know what that sin is but I do not talk about it so I do not lead those into it. I could not take my life because I have people who depend upon me. I fail and right now am failing but even though things are hard, Jesus is with me. My love for Christ stops me and I must be here for those who need me. I pray you and everyone reading this never have to think about suicide. If you are thinking this way, please call these numbers The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a 24-hour, toll-free suicide prevention service available to anyone in suicidal crisis. My take on suicide is: jump, pull the trigger or drink the Kool Aid if that makes you happy. Whichever you choose, you're gonna end in the same place, 6 feet in the ground
