Have a fire extinguisher approved for automotive use. In our vintage/collector car association it is required to have one in the vehicle. Call 911, then IF it's safe, try to extinguish the fire. If it gets out of hand, get away. Safety first.

Like an under hood car fire? or in the cabin? If you carry a fire extinguisher and have gloves, you can pop the hood and get one put out quite easily before it gets out of hand. Once the interior ingnites, however, you are best to get it off the road and get away from it. Putting a car out requires a LOT of water. Specialty foam products added to the water in the fire truck, can reduce the amount of water used and speed up the extinguishing process - but the bottom line is this: If the interior catches on fire - your car is done. So be well away from it.

run away :)

Using a fire extinguisher right away. Make sure you try to aim it away from blowing the flames into the dried grass underneath or to the side of the car just in case. I've seen some fires where the extinguisher blew the flames down and the parking are went up in flames as the car just sat there, causing a huge field fire as secondary damage.
