Becuse,at the time, it was the BIGEST ocean liner and it caried the most people. Plus, after being built, it was deemed UNsinkablbe.

The titanic is probably so famous because this ship was stated to be "THe Unsinkable." It was built stable and large and the people were all positive it was strong and stable, yet it hit one iceberg, broke in half, and sunk! moral of the story- PEOPLE ARE DUMB!!!! lol.

It was the "Unsinkable Ship!"
-
Because it was the ship that could not sink.
-
It was deemed "un-sinkable" and it was the biggest oceanliner at that time, however I believe that the reason that it is so popular is that it was 1) on it's maiden voyage,2) a lot of the wealthiest people in the world at that time were aboard and 3) the movie phenomenon has done a lot in the past few years to push it towards the top.
-
Another reason is that there were survivors who described the people who stayed on board to die as chivalrous and admirable in every way. It is a story about people doing the right thing in the face of death and that still resonates strongly today. Also Di Caprio and Winslet were on it and that was just so sad and stuff.

The Titanic had many great story lines about it. --As others have noted, it was supposed to be "unsinkable". --It sunk on its maiden voyage. --It sunk in nearly perfect weather. --The Titanic was the largest and most luxurious ocean liner built to that time. --Many wealthy and famous people of the day were on board. --All sorts of people (engineers, White Star Line management, Captain Edward J. Smith, etc.) made poor decisions that contributed to the magnitude of the tragedy. Many of these bad decisions seem to be the result of greed and/or ego. ---Etc. This surplus of compelling stories has made the Titanic the most famous shipwreck in history.

It made headlines for it was the largest and most technologically advanced ship of it's time. The crew was pressed to take the ship's engines to their limit to get to New York ahead of time by one day.It hit an iceberg, and almost 70% of the occupants did not survive, partly to due with the fact that there was about enough lifeboats for about 1/3 of the passengers. It was a tragedy of the day for it was unnecessary. Also it was famous for it showed the class system of the day which made sure first class passengers got the lifeboats first. It was supposed to be unsinkable, and Molly Brown was famous as the unsinkable Molly Brown.

Passenger liners always get more media coverage probably because there are hundreds of 'civilians' onboard. The were many rich and famous people onboard the Titanic and this always helps.
