  • protein, peanut butter and tofu
  • Vegetarians usually miss out on the proteins. If you are vegetarian try adding nuts and tofu to your diet. Tofu is offered in a variety of ways - find the style you like most. If you want it to taste meaty, they even have that now! ALthough, if you are a meat lover, it might not be the same (my husband claims he can tell when I sneak tofu into our meals instead of ground turkey (I still can't stomach red meat)) ** edit. I forgot to mention iron. It can be a biggie if you are not into dark green leaf veggies!!
  • Protein and Iron are the main things found in meat. In meat there is a complete complement of essential amino acids, and to get this from non-meat sources is simple, but you must combine grains & legumes, as each type is deficient in one essential amino acid that the other makes up for. In regard to iron, there are many vegetable sources it can be gained from, but it is not as available to the body for absorption as iron from meat it (haem iron versus non-haem iron). If you take foods containing vitamin C at the same time you will increase the absorption of iron from non-haem sources.
  • I have found that there is no lack of nutrients by not eating meat.I have been a vegetarian for many years.I also know someone that had been a vegetarian almost their whole life. Also their children have never eaten meat and are now in their late teens, and perfectly healthy .Meatless products are fine if you miss the taste and texture of meat ,but for nutrition it is not necessary .
  • From my personal experience I would say vegetarians do not miss out on any nutrients. I've been a vegetarian all my life, never tasted meat or eggs. I am a perfectly healthy middle age person with 20/20 vision, never had a headache in my life and knock on wood, have never been sick. I also donate blood three times per year.
  • One very important vitamin essential to your health is B12. You don't need much of it, but you need it to maintain your red blood cells. This is found only in animal products or animal-made products. If you eat eggs or drink milk, you are fine. However, if you are a vegan, you might think of getting B12 supplements, or eating special cereals designed for vegans. http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitaminb12.asp
  • Vegetarians, if following a healthy, balanced diet, do not miss out on ANY nutrients.
  • As long as the still maintain a healthy diet, which has been proven to not include most meats,...vegetarians can get the same nutrients from nuts, beans, and certain green veggies.
  • Vegetarians who eat eggs and dairy products should have no problems at all. They should observer the same low-level attention to getting a balanced diet as should omnivores. Vegans may suffer from some B vitamin deficiencies, particularly B12. This can easily be remedied with supplements from any heal;h food shop.
