  • I don't think so. He can be credited as being the first writer who gave a coherent description of a Schizophrenic person in his "diary of a Madman" (1835"), but he was not mentally ill himself. He was very sensitive, though, and towards the end of his life he turned to religion. He died during an excessive period of fasting, at the age of 42 years.
