the magnitude of an object is an objects brightness at one frequency or one range of frequencies. The colour of an object is the brightness at one (range of) frequency(ies) subtracted from another (range of) frequency(ies). This is done to remover systematic effects of measurement and can be thought of as a truer property of the object being observed.
