The crime of murder, in England, does not explicitly distinguish between "first degree" murder and "second degree" murder. On the other hand, England (like most other common-law jurisdictions) does differentiate between murder and manslaughter.

One of the major problems in the criminal law of England is whether provocation is sufficient to reduce a murder charge to manslaughter. Present court decisions say that a man who kills a woman in a fit of jealousy ("Forgive me, Delilah, I just couldn't take any more.") can have his charge of murder reduced to a conviction for manslaughter, while a woman who kills a man after years of being abused by him ("The Burning Bed" scenario) remains liable for murder.

Most English murders happen in fiction and are committed there by people who bear hardly any similarity at all to real English people. Hence the popularity of the copious works of Agatha Christie, and Dorothy Sayers and many, many others.

A draconian law that prevents English people from owning handguns limits the scope for murder, though our stupid criminalisation of drug addiction is encouraging those involved in the trade to arm themselves illegally in order to kill one another, but English murders take place in idyllic villages, or in country houses, and are perpetrated by doctors or vicars or other apparently upper-middle class characters a million miles away from territorial wars fought by rival drug-dealers in the decaying suburbs of our larger cities. There the (real) murders are much more American in style.
