  • Because they are gay.
  • They are being made.   Chicago Mamma Mia! Evita Mulin Rouge   Just a few examples there.
  • Uhh....Hairspray, Mama Mia. Now the remakes are going strong. Jim Carrey is doing "Damn Yankees" (GROAN)
  • Because we realised they were a terrible idea.
  • Budget cuts and such. I agree! Though I really hate musicals, you just don't get the sense of scale and grandeur that The King And I produced. And remember those costumes tha ladies used to wear, like Ginger Rogers? Beautiful! But never seen anymore.
  • i wish they would, but we don't have that same talent!! i mean, in terms of writers, costume designers, dancers, singers and actors... we no longer find the same work-ethic, where a group of talented people genuinely love what they do and are willing to dedicate their lives until that "picture" is complete. now, actors and singers want to "promote" their films across several continents within days, and are too distracted with tabloid-rumors and perfume sales. reality shows, spoof cheap comedies steal the ratings nowadays because that is what sells. the audience has changed, too. we are in a different era now.
  • They are in a sort of way. But times have changed. with them so are the actors. So now you have Wicked, High School musical, Mama Mia and remakes like hair spray. Until some hollywood guy has a revelation about them you are sort of stuck with what you get. May I suggest going to a live action theater? They are much better for that kind of fare.
  • The fact is that production costs are easier for modern studios to deal with, though there are plenty of modern musicals. Musicals are relatively cheap to make, write, etc., and are often merely stage adaptations. They don't generally have lots of special effects or rely heavily on setting/props/costuming because the reason most people go to musicals is the music. Take a look at how cheaply done even the best of the classic musicals were compared to other movies at the time.
  • They are but there is so much competition with the advent of TV and the internet they seem to be drawing somewhat less attention.
  • Film industry unions, making such gigantic productions cost prohibitive. Star and mogul greed. Less than admirable role model behavior. Philosophy that sex, not family fare, sells. [proven wrong over and over again...but who cares...just snort another line of snow 'n take what ya get!] Haven't ya noticed, the "High and Mighty" don't care what the average person on the streets wants. Millions simply having an axe to grind with Hollywood. Put it all together...you get garbage. +5
  • They are....hundreds are being churned out by Bollywood every month. I recommend a classic love triangle romance called Kuch Kuch Hota Hai :-p
  • i guess that all just like the violence and action these days that are shown on movies... *sigh*
  • maybe because they suck and no one can make money off of them+4.
  • Because musical tastes have become more diversified than they were back then, and there are more listening choices. Back then, there were fewer genres and sub-genres of music to chose from, and people were more likely to listen to the same music. Because of that, it's harder to market a new musical that would have widespread (aka profitable) appeal.
  • Because when Cole Porter was born...They broke the mold. And when he died, so did his talent.
