  • I think it was with Mark Twain that American English came to gain a separate genre of the language. He wrote English the way Americans spoke it. Arguably he was also one of the greatest authorities of American English. Most of the American word spellings as distinguished from British spellings too could be attributed to him. This way he standardized American English. These contributions of Mark Twain to American English could very well be called democratization of American English writing. Writing in a language that was common man's language in the US. This is my understanding of the topic in question.
