  • I think it gives a sense of individuality, to be THE *band name*, rather than the possibility of 'a' *band name*, I think it's a bit overdone maybe, but it's hard to justify simply not using it for that reason *shrugs* :)
  • It's the most logical way to name a band, just like a group of anything would be so named. If there are a group of teachers and a group of students standing over there, you'd say this group consists of the teachers and that group the students. So that was what the first rock groups tended to name themselves. Obviously, since not all of them could call themselves "The Musicians," they naturally took artistic liberty and named their band something else, like The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. Then bands went a step further and just named the band itself rather than referring to themselves as individuals within a band (as Twhupfold mentioned in his answer). So then we had The Pink Floyd Sound drop their name baggage, and band names like Cream and Buffalo Springfield were created. As time went on, many bands brought back the "the" for various reasons. For instance, the garage rock bands that resurfaced in 2003 or so sought to recall their influences--- the obscure garage rock bands of the 60's that often had "the" in their band names, like The Sonics and The Electric Prunes. BTW, The Band and The Who are the best band names ever.
  • because "the" is a universal word. everyone uses it. they probably don't even think about it when they pick it as a word in the name.
  • It's more catchy.
  • It's an old Rock and Roll thing that is sometimes still used.
  • It sounds good with the "THE." THE ARCHIES. Sounds good.
  • Because it's an article and is the most common word in the English language: http://www.wordcount.org/main.php
  • Don't forget "The The" not to be redundant or anything. http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geu9velmxGYHcBGdNXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTB2Z2VtZDE4BHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDNARjb2xvA2UEdnRpZAMEbANXUzE-/SIG=12fdbih7i/EXP=1181608030/**http://www.vh1confidential.com/artists/az/the_the/bio.jhtml
