To me a sweater/jumper/pullover/jersey, is a knitted garment either hand or machine, while a sweatshirt consists of a fleece man-made fabric and constructed on a sewing machine rather than knitting.

Sweatshirt usually has a 'shirt' type collar whereas a sweater has a normal knitted collar.
