What happens if your motherboard doesn't support 5.1 surround and you don't have a sound card, and you try to use 5.1 surround anyway? Will it still work?

If you're lucky, you'll get 2.1 sound. If you're unlucky, you'll only hear 2 of the five channels. Last time I tried playing a DVD that defaulted to 5.1 surround, I couldn't hear the dialog until I specifically told it to play in (regular) stereo. (Whoever thought setting it to default thusly should be beaten!) Either way, it will NOT work.

You won't get all of the channels and this *may* lead to some oddness. Last time I accidentally did this, I couldn't hear most of the dialog until I reset it to stereo.
