It cost more money, this is on an electric-Gas hybrid bus: Gasoline an average of $2.49 per gallon and diesel cost an average of $2.29 per gallon. This lower fuel economy, combined with a higher fuel cost for gasoline, resulted in fuel costs per mile being $.74 per mile for the hybrids as compared to $.65 per mile for the diesels.

You can't wean people off petrol that easily.

When I was a kid, the city busses were powered by overhead electric lines. No smoke or stink and no noise. You had to tolerate looking at the lines above the street, though. That probably would bother some people.
