First Aid Treatment of SnakeBite The principles of first aid treatment now accepted as being most suitable for snake bite are as follows: ACTION (i) immediately apply a broad firm bandage to cover the bitten area. In the case of a limb, as much as possible of the limb should be bound. The bandage should be bound as tightly as for a sprained ankle; (ii) immobilise affected limb with some form of splint; leave the bandage and splint on until medical care is reached; (iii) bring transport to the victim if possible; do not permit him/her to move around more than is necessary; (iv) if the snake can be safely killed bring it in with the victim. NOTE: (i) DO NOT apply an arterial tourniquet; (ii) DO NOT cut or excise the bitten area; (iii) The principles outlined are for snake bite only. Other types of envenomation such as spider bite frequently require alternative methods of treatment.
