    Unfortunately, callsigns in the movies are written by authors, that's why "Iceman" and "Maverick" were used...in the real world of Naval Aviation, callsigns are usually given to novice student pilots by their instructors, most often as a result of some bonehead stunt they lived to tell about. Some are given in response to physical characteristics (like Pudge) or appearance (like Red). Others are glaringly obvious, often just a mispronunciation or shortening of a pilot's name, like Woody (for Woodford), or Maggot (for a friend of mine, Scot Magidson). I was tagged with "Swoop" for an unusually stupid (but incredibly impressive) low pass at an incredibly high rate of speed over a Naval Air Station golf course, with a retired Admiral watching from below...DOH!
