When you stay at a hotel, how well do you take care of the room? Do you leave a mess or is your idea of trashing your hotel room refusing to fill out the guest comment card?

I don't do anything reckless in a hotel room that I wouldn't do at my own place. I'm respectful towards the people that clean it and don't intentionally make a mess for them. I think it's horrible when people have that "I don't have to clean it so I'll ruin it worse" attitude.

I try to keep my mess down to a dull roar.

I know that the cleaning lady (and 99.9999% of the time it is a woman) will have to do certain tasks (changing the bed linens, cleaning the toilet, etc.) no matter what I do.

But if there are 3 wastebaskets, I try to use just one so that she doesn't have empty/change the bags in all 3.

I'll also pile my used towels in one spot so it's easy to see which ones can be left for the next guest.

It doesn't take much effort, it's polite, and it's environmentally sound (the less the cleaning lady has to clean, the less resources are used).

It seems to me as if tourists don't make a big mess. However, when a person lives locally, you can almost expect them to destroy the room. It would be nice if people were courteous to other people as opposed to making a mess.

I'm so neurotic that I go a step further than just leaving it clean; I try to make it look as if I didn't even use the room, or I try to help out the house-keeping staff. Here are some examples:

    1 Making the bed. OR
2 Stripping the bed-linen and leaving it all neatly folded on one corner at the foot of the bed.
3 Scrubbing the bath-tub or shower stall before and after using them (I either carry a scrub-brush and cleaning agent in my suitcase or I buy them when I arrive).
4 Wiping down the mirrors, sink, and counter-top (I can't stand streaks, water-spots and toothpaste ricochets).
5 Leaving the used towels, washcloths and bathmat in one corner of the bathroom floor to show they're ready to be replaced.

    Ok, here's the BIG one:

6 NEVER leaving any trash in the room whatsoever. That includes in the trash cans. I carry all of my trash with me when I leave the room, and I throw it away somewhere else, such as the lobby, the trash cans at the exits, the parking lot, etc.
