Unless they're dressed in a religious robe (e.g., monks), then they're sleeping. Before falling asleep, they time how long the trip will take to reach their destination, mentally set the duration, then sleep. Their body-clock wakes them up when it's time. It takes a little practice :).

They catnap. When a certain stop comes along, they wake up enough to notice where they are.
