  • Most of Dickens. George Elliot especially Middlemarch. Terry Pratchett - nearly all of his books are excellent. Douglas Adams - Hitch-hiker's Guide To The Galaxy. John Milton - Paradise Lost. DH Lawrence - Sons and Lovers (I hated it at school but it is well written in retrospect) Thomas Hardy - Tess of the d'Urbervilles. George Orwell - 1984, Animal Farm. Arthur C Clarke - Childhood's End, Rendezvous With Rama Mary Shelley - Frankenstein (if you go for Gothic horror) A few to keep you going.

  • Have you read: Brave New World? (sci-fi) Morse books? (crime) Lord of the Flies? (crap) Discworld series? (fantasy sci-fi) Any Orwell books? (mostly useless) Why do they have to be British? And where are you from?
