    "...South Carolina... threatened to withdraw from the Union..." (Roberts, 158).
    "Earlier that year Southern leaders had warned that the election of a Republican President would cause the South to leave the Union. With Lincoln's victory, South Carolina took steps to carry out this threat..." (Roberts, 191).
