While Bartholdi designed the statue itself, the framework was designed by Alexandre-Gustav Eiffel and the pedestal she stands on was designed by Newport architect Richard Morris Hunt. The pedestal was built on top of the 11-pointed, star-shaped Fort Wood that pre-dated the statue.
