  • The age for breeding all dogs in general is at least 2 years in order to make sure that your dog is not a puppy itself. You should never breed before the 2nd heat cycle and do not wait past 4 years old--this insures the health of the mother. Of course your vet can tell you what's best for your specific dog.
  • Veterinarians suggest beginning to breed small dogs such as Pomeranians when they are 2 years old. Breeding dogs too early when they are young can cause health problems to both the female and the litter. My friend's cousin has Poms, and it was by accident that her female dog got pregnant at one year, they had no idea she was pregnant and their Vet got really mad because breeding at one-year is inappropriate. The dog ended up having a litter of 3, one female and two males. The female died after 2 days from birth and one of the males died 3 weeks later.
