  • I have not used both but I have heard bad things about Microsoft Defender.
  • I prefer AVG
  • AVG free isn't that great, but it's better than Microsoft Defender. If you have a subscription to AVG then it's pretty good. I use NOD32, but you have to pay for it.
  • You're comparing apples and oranges here. Bear in mind that Defender is not an anti virus application nor is AVG (at least the free edition) an anti spyware package. I wouldn't recommend using AVG free edition without something like Spybot and Adaware for spyware and adware and I wouldn't advise using Window Defender at all.
  • I use AVG 8.0, SpyBot 6.1, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware and a program called Glary Utilities for registry repair. I have been using this line of defense for about 3 yrs now without any problems and its the same ones I place on my customers, no matter if they have XP or Vista. If you would like step by step instructions for downloads and "How to sheets " for managing the software just let me know.
