The first automatic transmission available to the general public was Oldsmobile's Hydra-Matic system. The automatic transmission was based on technology developed by German engineers. Oldsmobile first developed the Hydra-Matic system in 1938, and first made available to the general public on all models in 1940, as an available option for $57.
