Matters where you are in life and in the world. In some societies it doesn't matter what you know, as long as you have the right connections. but in others how you grow to be prosperous is by the knowledge you have, it has very little to do with who you know. I personally think that knowledge is most important and that nothing should be based off of connections, but those connections seem to help people with knowledge get off on the right foot.

Well, that depends on what your intentions are. If you intend to seek advancement in an organization that is more politically run than ethically run, yes I agree it is true. If you wish to live a life where you can actually sleep at night with a clean conscience, then no it isn't true. At times when you want to get things accomplished that would normally take a long time if you go through the standard channels, then this is true. It comes down to the "what matters" part of it. If your goal is simply to get something as fast as possible with as little effort as possible, then yes. If your goal is to actually learn something and better yourself, then it isn't true because self improvement is what matters.

In the small town I come from yes, but I have also lived in bigger cities and poeple could care less. So I think it depends on if you make a name for yourself bad or good or if you live in a small town.

The old boys network is where that quote is used a lot. And I believe it is true in some parts of society especially in Upper class. On the other hand meritocracy does also exist! If you work and play hard you'll get there so it is also about what you know. For example doctors don't get their jobs because of who their parents know. It's because they work hard day and night. It could also be a combination of the two which 'matters'

Who you know can have an impact sometimes, but is not as reliable as what you know. What you know makes for a stronger, more independent person. And that's preferable to me.

I have had many different jobs in my life and I can honestly say that out of them all, only one was got by going throught the proper channels - application form and interview, all the others I've got through knowing someone else who worked there or someone 'putting a good word in for me.'

Yes I would agree wholeheartedly with that statement. More so in some fields than others .The 'Old Boys Network ' is still very much in evidence, as is nepotism in many career fields.
