water, food, candles, matches enough medications(we never run low on on-hand supplies)...we live in a +/- temperate climate..so food, water and possible injuries would be our big deal in an emergency...plus we live on the 16th floor in a condo..so chances are good that we could easily be stuck in here for a week (we are in Earthquake prone country:))..and we have the gas grill on the deck outside... BTW thanks for making me do the mental checklist:)

A sword, I'm just worried about zombies.

I would say it depends were you live but having cash and/or even some silver, gold, diamonds is a good idea. A weapon of some kind. Those things I have and are basic. If I lived in a flood area, I'd have a small inflatable boat, if I lived in a tornado zone I'd have a small shelter under the house. Common sense.
-
A copy of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". The words "Don't Panic!" on its cover are invaluable in case of emergency.
-
When I was a public school teacher, I used to carry a pocketknife with me. Then they made that illegal. I now carry a set of non-functioning keys. They work in much the same way.

First Aid kit in the basement. Medical supply cabinet on the 2nd floor entailing an array of prescriptive as well as non-prescriptive drugs. We also keep an inventory of medical periphals in there. As far as physical proxy is concerned, Ive been trained in First Aid, and have an uncanny ability to open cans of whoop-arse in rapid succession if need be :)
