How do the "roadside bomb" devices (which have resulted in so many NATO deaths in Afghanistan) work/do their destructive damage?

A lot of them are pressure plates that have been placed in the road. Other ways are around overpasses, they fill bags with liquid explosives too, and they detonate it via cell phone. Most of the bomb materials are the United States UXO that they've picked up and wired, most of the time with a pre-paid cellphone.
