Question

Help answer this question below.

I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand AM, I ran out of gas and now it won't start after refueling it. It will turn over occasionally but only run for 1-2 seconds before dying again. It seems like it's trying to start up, but just can't. Can some one please help?

try changing the fuel filter, as the debris in the bottom of your gas tank may have clogged it. Or maybe you burned out the fuel pump by running it on empty for too long. You can test this by locating and purging the valve in the fuel rail. Do this while cranking the engine or when the key is in the ON position. Or possibly the sediment and debris from the bottom of the tank, made it through the filter and clogged your injectors....

There was probably a bunch or "crap" in the bottom of your fuel tank that has accumulated over time. When you ran it out of gas all that "crap' was probably sucked into your fuel filter. I would try changing your fuel filter first, that's probably the cheapest place to start. Good luck!

If you tried to start it a lot of times after you ran out of gas you have probably seized the pump. this very common. To check put your ear to filler neck and have someone turn on key. you should hear pump run for a couple of seconds. if not have someone hit bottom of tank with rubber hammer while you try to start engine. I have done this many times and it will quite often start seizing pump.regardless if it does you will still need new pump. running low on gas is the biggest fuel pump destroyer there is. good luck

YOu should never let your gas tank go below 1/4 mark on your fuel guage. moisture and debris will enter the gas line and create havoc, as you have witnessed.

Go to auto zone and buy a can of dry-out. this will eliminate the moisture in your gas tank and will hopefully have you on the road again.

Your fuel pump may be burnt up.
Have you tried priming the ignition switch so fuel can fill up all of the passeges instead of just starting it up off the bat?
