My name is Amara. My parents opened the baby name book, closed their eyes, and pointed to a few random names. Among those were Abra, Jane and Glynis. While it would have been easier to live as Jane, and cooler to have the same name as a great Smashing Pumpkins song, I definitely prefer MY name.

According to my Mum my first name (Tanya) is Russia or Polish in origin and my middle name (Jane) is named after her fave place to get cakes, Jane's Pantry.

Denise, my mum wanted to call me Dafny, but when my dad went to the registry office to register my birth he registered me as Denise. He told my mum he'd made a mistake and thought that was what she'd said she wanted to call me. He told me he hated Dafny.

My name is T.J., short for Thomas John. Thomas is my dad and John is my mom's dad. I think I became T.J. because my dad was cheating on my mom and left her while she was pregnant with me so she didn't want a little Tom running around. but that's just my theory.

John Forest. My mum wanted to call me Lium, but my father would have no part of that, he wanted me to simply be John, but that was too "Normal" for her tastes, so they compromised and decided to give me the first name of John, the middle name of Forest, and just let me pick which variation of the two I wanted to go by later. I went by Forest mostly when I was younger, and my family and older friends still call me that, but the older I get the more I find myself falling back on John instead, for the sake of not standing out so much more than anything else.

Because they had learned the the person I'm named after was a French hero and they liked the name. Wierd since I'm actually German and they could have named me after one of my dad's brothers, Simon, Harm, Onno, etc. On second thought, maybe I didn't get the worst name after all.

My Mom wanted to name me Sigurdbjorn (I was born and raised in non-Scandinavian Canada). I don't know if she picked this name because she wanted to pay homage to my Dad's Icelandic background (my opinion) or because she actualy likes the name (Mom's contention). Thankfully Dad vetoed so Mom picked another and Dad said (I imagine), "Well, at least it isn't bloody Sigurdbjorn."
