iWork '09 has a lot of value added built in compared to other suites available in the Windows environment. However, if you're only looking for typical office type applications then iWork isn't neccessary.
However if you are only looking to use an "MS Office" type suite, I would suggest you check out Open Office which is a free "Office" suite with interoperability with "MS Office" and is available in Windows, Linux and Mac OSX flavours.
