Mardi Gras, as well as being the name of the day itself, is a season that starts on January 6th (Feast of the Epiphany, or the twelfth day after Christmas). It continues through the day before Ash Wednesday. The Catholic Church legitimised this festival of feasts (taken from pre-Christian revelers) as a way to delineate the journey to penitence at Lent. Fat Tuesday... It's the day before lent starts. Lots of people fast or give up things they love during lent. So Fat Tuesday is the LAST DAY to PARTY.
