The most probable cause is from a non native mite that attacks bees and spreads a virus to the bees that they have no immunity to. I am looking into starting a small honey operation at my place and I am fortunate to have one of the largest bee supply outlets in the world very near by. They have recommended dusting new and old hives with a chemical to kill the mites as they have become almost epidemic.
