No, not always but they do help a lot.

They used to be. But not now. Desease causing bacterium have built up so much of resistance to high power anti-biotics - leave alone grandma's home remedies. We ourselves are responsible for this state of affairs. We could have prevented the bacterium from building up resistence by completing courses of medicine prescribed by doctors. We always stopped the moment we felt better allowing the germs to become drug resistent.
