What is the best strategy to get high points in tetris?

I love tetris! My method is to clear lines one at a time as the blocks come down and not worry about leaving small gaps. My boyfriend disagrees and always piles the blocks up leaving a big column, then waits for the long shape and gets 4 lines at once...(i normally win...;) hehe).
