X = 6, Y = 2 1/2 of X is 3, 3 + 2 is 5, and 3 - 2 is 1.

Do you seriously not know how to do it? The method you use is called substitution. Simply isolate one of the variables to one side of the equal sign. Let's isolate the Y. ½X+Y=5 (write the equation) Y=5-½X (subtract ½X from both sides) ½X-Y=1 (write the equation) ½X=1+Y (add Y to both sides) Y=½X-1 (subtract 1 from both sides) So, now we know what Y equals. Since Y=5-½X and Y=½X-1, we can conclude that 5-½X=½X-1. This makes it super easy to find what X is. 5-½X=½X-1 (write the equation) 5=½X-1+½X=X-1 5=X-1 6=X Okay, so we figured X=6. Now let's plug 6 back into one of the original equations to see what Y is. ½X+y=5 (write the original equation) ½(6)+y=5 (substitute 6 for X) 3+y=5 y=5-3=2 (isolate Y) y=2 Okay, so we figured out that Y=2 and X=6. The beauty of these types of problems is you can check them easily by plugging the numbers you just got into the second equation. ½X-y=1 (write the second equation) ½(6)-(2)=1 (plug the numbers in 3-2=1 - is it right? If yes, then you're probably in good shape. If you're not understanding some of the arithmetic operations used above, you should really consider a math tutor. I didn't take this stuff seriously in middle school and it was hard to catch up.

Just add the two equations together and the value of x is given to you. Substitute it into either equation and get y. This is about as easy as it gets.
