Why is it that, despite their smaller budgets, British sitcoms are superior to American sitcoms?

Actually I never thought that, I know Americans and Brits keep repackaging each other shows. But the only BBC shows I ever made a habit of watching was "Red Dwarf" and "Absolutely Fabulous". Honestly I'm spoiled from big budgets shows though.

can you give examples? Is it that the sense of humour is different? Or that a smaller number of sitcoms in production means that you do not end up with a formulaic approach? would the american sitcoms seem funnier if there were not so many of them which seem to follow an indentical formula?
